Hi, I'm Josh 👋
When I was 24, I quit my job to become a professional piano player.
There was just one problem. I didn't know how to play piano.
I'd been a singer my whole life -- high school musicals, college a cappella, even national TV -- but I was always jealous of people who could just sit down and play. So one day, I decided... I'm gonna figure this out.
Long story short, I worked my ass off to learn 4 songs in 3 months, auditioned for a dueling piano bar, and got the gig. I played professionally for 6 years. Through all the blood, sweat, and elbow grease, I learned some incredible secrets that make learning music MUCH easier than they tell you.
In my program, I'll show you how I learned so fast, so you can too.
GET ACCESSWhat Secrets, Josh?
I'll happily tell you, but you still have to put in the work. Here they are:
Secret 1: Music Theory
Ladies and Gentlemen, music theory is THE intellectual shortcut that can shave years off of your learning journey.
WHY DOES NO ONE TALK ABOUT THIS? Honestly, I don't know. Learning music theory helps with EVERYTHING. With theory, you can...
- Look up chords to any song on the internet and know what notes to play
- Accelerate your ability to learn songs by ear
- Improvise
- Understand harmonies
- Understand the hidden logic behind all of music... (!!!) like why certain notes sound good and others sound bad
Every other "learn piano" program will tell you not to bother with music theory because they're playing into your idea that it's "scary." It's not scary. It's incredibly useful. And it was so important for me that I decided to create the best music theory course in the world.
Secret 2: The way you practice matters
It's actually shocking how many people, including professional musicians, practice inefficiently.
On my journey, I studied the science of rapid skill acquisition and applied it to learn piano faster than anyone I've ever met.
How Does the Program Work?
Step 1: Learn a Bit of Music Theory
Music Theory is so useful that I make you learn the basics before anything else. By the end of 6 10-15 min videos, you'll be able to look up chords to any song online and know how to play them. (And there's more after that!)
Step 2: Pick a Song, Find the Chords Online, Start Practicing
I recommend picking a slow, simple song to start, but it's your choice.
Step 3: Come to a Group Coaching Call
This is where our community gathers regularly to support each other, geek out on music theory, and ask me how to practice for max results.
Step 4: Perform, Post, & Celebrate!
Play your first song, post in the group, and be celebrated by our community!
Step 5: Keep Learning
Go deeper with theory. Learn more tunes. Become a true musician!
Do I REALLY Have to Learn Music Theory?
I could literally make dozens of courses about various aspects of music. But most of them would be wastes of time. Why?
Because when I was learning, I just watched YouTube videos of people playing songs I wanted to learn.
YouTube is incredible. You can watch a tutorial of a person playing a song, stop the video at every frame, and learn the hand positions. Voila, you learned a song.
That’s how I learned many of my first few songs before I got a teacher.
But even when I got a teacher, often I’d usually ask him to play something, take a top-down video of his hands, and use that video to practice on my own.
So YouTube already has a lot of what you need to learn piano.
You just need to know how to practice for maximum results. Most people don’t know how to practice, and that’s one thing I cover a lot in our group coaching calls.
But let's get to your question: do you have to learn music theory?
Technically no but it helps A LOT.
Music Theory is the grammar of music. It helps you know what notes "fit" where.
The biggest question when you start learning is “What notes do I play?"
Most people answer that question by learning how to read sheet music. Then the sheet music tells you what notes to play.
So you learn some pieces and maybe even memorize them.
But that’s like learning Spanish by memorizing paragraphs without understanding what the words mean!
When you learn Spanish, you learn to speak the language. You learn about nouns and verbs, and you understand that when you put a sentence together, words need to go in a certain sequence to make sense.
To over-illustrate the point, here’s the same sentence as above but the words are in a different order.
words go Spanish need learn, you sense sentence you about certain and verbs, and when when understand that learn you put a in a nouns together, to sequence make you to.
When you sit at a piano and play notes at random, it sounds terrible, like the above sentence.
But when you understand the grammar of music — and you understand what notes go together and why, you can play stuff that makes sense.
Of course, learning sheet music is great if you want to play classical music.
But as a singer, you just want to play songs you can sing, and maybe even write a few.
So you need to ask the question: “How do you know what notes to play?”
I'm telling you. Just learn music theory.
When I was learning, II went to the Berklee College of Music’s website, and I found that they put all of their freshmen and sophomores through a 4 semester theory curriculum. So I bought all 4 textbooks and read ‘em.
This course teaches the most important stuff from textbooks, but presented in a MUCH cooler way, and distilled to the essentials you need to know to get started accompanying yourself.
So do you want to be able to…
- Accompany yourself singing your favorite song?
- Accompany your partner so he/she/they can sing their favorite song?
- Play any song by looking up chords on the internet?
- Understand what musicians mean when they say “It’s a 1-4-5 progression in the key of C”
- See the hidden logic behind what makes notes sound good and bad
- Jam with other musicians?
- Improvise at the piano?
THEN LEARN MUSIC THEORY 😊
